An investigation has been launched following a strange scene that played out in the back of George Washington Middle School after a truck driver struck a 15-year-old boy at the corner of Montgomery and North Patrick Streets.
Following the crash, police say that the driver headed to the rear of the school, nearly striking more children until the SRO took out his service weapon to protect the students from being harmed, forcing the driver to head in a different direction.
As a result, the driver of the Penske truck drove off and there were no other injuries were reported. The teen who was struck was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspected truck involved in the hit-and-run was later located unoccupied at the Eisenhower Connector, investigators said. The driver has not been identified.
While the incident was ongoing, George Washington Middle School was placed briefly in a "secure the building status," according to officials, barring anyone from entering or leaving the school, though it lasted just minutes.
After-school activities were also canceled on Wednesday as a result.
The investigation into the hit-and-run is ongoing.
